Enjoying etching - a new printing video!
I'm delighted to be able to share with you a new video of me printing a two-plate etching in my studio. It's only 3 minutes long, as I've edited down from the actual 30 minute inking and printing process so that you can quickly see the best bits!
I've tried all ways of explaining to people in words and pictures what it means to print an etching in multi-colour but it just doesn't make sense until you see it with your own eyes. As I'm using 12 colours on two plates it's not as straightforward as a regular one plate, one colour etching. My way of inking up with several colours is called "A la poupée" which means "with the dolly" the dolly being the little ball of cloth (scrim) that's used to blend the colours.
I hope this video gives you an insight into how my etchings are printed. Now I need to make another video of how the plates are made - that's another story... I'll work on it next year. But if you want a brief explanation please check out The Exquisite art of Etching.
The print shown here is called "Safely Gathered In" and it's available either framed or mounted in my online shop. On the day I shot the video, I was printing the last few in the edition of 50. A number of my editions are now sold out or down to just a handful. Please subscribe to my list to be among the first to find out about new editions.
