For this dynamic sky, I used translucent oily ink that moves around easily and is extremely sensitive to marks made with a cloth. I love making the wispy cloud effects with a very light touch. I was aiming for a brooding but beautiful light with plenty of energy and vitality. I even put on some pop music to get my whole body moving! The trees cluster together on the rise as though defending themselves against the elements. You can see me working on this piece and others like it on this short YouTube video.
A monotype is a one-off hand-made print, just as unique as a painting. I used rollers and dabbers to spread out ink on a smooth plastic board then made marks with a cloth and other tools. The ink was transferred to the paper using a hand-operated printing press. I built up layers of over-lapping colours by printing several times. I incorporated textures by impressing inked up textured paper and fabric. I also used paper stencils to make the crisp edges.
